A fantastic game by the Little Baycats defeating Cheltenham in the State League grand final 18-8 played at Cheltenham.  The Baycats got off to a great start with singles to Lachlan Medew and Liam Spence and walks to Ethan Hosking, Will Ford and Ren Susuki and some good at bats along the way scoring 4 runs in the first innings.  With Emerson Rickard pitching for Geelong, Cheltenham came back with a single and a double, a near great catch from Blake Nicholls running back for the ball, for 2 runs in return before Emerson settled into his game.  Geelong scored 2 more in the 2nd dig, on 2 walks and a missed fly ball.  Emerson took control on the mound with only 13 hitters coming to the plate for Cheltenham in the next 3 digs for 1 hit and no runs scored.  Geelong continued the scoreboard pressure with 1 run in the 3rd, and 6 in the 4th from good hitting, clever base running and walks giving us a 13-2 lead into the 5th innings.  A scoreless 5th innings by Geelong despite singles to Lewis Crichton, Brayden Marsh and a walk to Ethan Jolly, then in Cheltenham’s 5th innings they got two lead off doubles as their bats came to life and Liam relieved Emerson.  Two more singles and 5 runs scored, had the score back to 13-7 into the last innings.  The Baycats replied with a lead off walk to Ethan Hosking, and singles to Liam, Will, Emerson, Lewis, Ren and a double from Lachlan for 5 runs putting the game out of reach for Cheltenham who managed 1 run in the last dig from scattered 3 hits.   Geelong had terrific input from all players, with outstanding defensive plays at Shortstop from Liam, pitching from Emerson and hitting from Ren (2h, 2bb, 2rbi’s), Lewis (2h, 1rbi), Liam (2h, 1rbi) and Lachlan (2h) for a great team effort all round securing the win.  Well done Emerson on the game MVP. A great team effort throughout the season by the kids, you are all thoroughly deserving of this premiership!

Under 14 Metro

Geelong 14 def Fitzroy 3

Safe Hits & RBI’s: Graydon Russell 2h/3RBI’s, Kurt Hillman 2h/2RBI’s, Nik Mills 2h/2RBI’s, Baden Remmos 2h/2RBI’s, Alistair Chandler 2h/1RBI, Wade Linguey 1h, Matt Benson 1h.

Pitching; Nik Mills     4Inn     1H       5SO     4BB     0WP    0ER     0RS

                  Kurt Hillman         1Inn     1H       3SO     1BB     1WP    1ER     3RS

Geelong Baycats again showed their dominance of the league running out winners 14 to 3 against its main season rivals, Fitzroy. The game got off to a lively start with the Fitzroy base runners advancing easily, however a strong throw from starting left fielder Matt Benson to Catcher Graydon Russell saw the lead runner retired at home plate, whilst starting pitcher Nik Mills finished off batters number 4 & 5 to shut out the innings. The Geelong batters came out of the box strongly registering 4 runs quickly, setting up the format for the rest of the game.

An outstanding effort on the mound from Nik Mills with four shut out innings, completely bamboozling the Fitzroy hitters. Nik also collected 2 hits and 2 RBIs, probably close to a best on ground performance. Kurt Hillman relieved allowing 3 runs but collecting 3 Ks as well.

Hit getters for Geelong were Graydon Russell, 2 hits and 2 RBIs, Kurt Hillman, 2H, 2RBIs, Nik Mills, 2H & 2 RBIs, Bayden Remmos 2H & 2 RBIs, Alistair Chandler 2H & 1 RBI, Wade Linguey 1H and Matt Benson 1H.

Graydon Russell led the way with the bat today collecting 1 homer and 4 stolen bases.

Special congratulations to all players who participated in this season, finishing premiers in their league.

Thank you to Bob, for his tireless confidence with the boys. Thanks also to Murray & Dale who gave up their time to help coach. Well done to all of you. A very special thank you to Peter Mills who makes himself available for any duty required; he has set up bases, helped coach during games and at training times. He is always ready to umpire when needed and is always on hand when required. Thank you Peter.

Last but not least, the Scorers. There have been a few who have helped (mainly Melinda Linguey), thank you to you all for your time and effort. Without these helpers and assistance we don’t have a game or a club.

Highlights: The fourths faced Essendon in a must-win semi-final which, besides progression through to the next round of finals, offered the chance of redemption for their sub-par performance at Boeing Reserve during the regular season.

James Wakefield started on the hill and put up two zeros while the hitters exercised discipline in the box to make good pitch selections and put the ball in play from those selections, then aggression on the basepaths. Phill Northfield, Josh Hay and Tim Dickson delivered the hits early, while others such as Brent Allitt provided great example of hustling out grounders. While the scoreline shows both sides made errors, we were lucky enough that Essendon's came at times when we were able to capitalise and bring home runners, especially early. Though Essendon, as we fully expected, managed to string some hard shots together to score three in the third, the defence were able to make the important outs, with Jarrod Durston and Matt Belfrage on the left side of the infield continuing their great form and James hitting spots, giving us a 9-3 lead after five.

In the top of the 6th, with the game approaching “extra time” in terms of regulation fourths play, Essendon again delivered with the bat and were able to take advantage of a couple of walks as James began to tire, as well as an untimely and controversial catcher's interference. When we got the third out, Essendon had drawn within one run to make the score 9-8.

Josh Hay led off the botton of the 6th with a typically unconventional but effective swing – a tennis-style overhead smash into left field. Josh later scored to give us a two run lead with three outs required to win the game. He then took the mound to close the game out and did so without further score, the game ending when Tim Dickson caught a fly ball in left field and fired back to Mick Stone at first to beat the runner coming back to tag up, completing a double play and a great victory, 10-8.

This week we go to Waverley, needing to bring our A-game once again to give us a chance to progress to the grand final against Doncaster. Go Baycats!

Geelong 10 def Waverly 9

Safe Hits & RBI’s; Liam Spence 2h/2RBI’s, Will Ford 1h/2RBI’s, Emerson Rickard, Ethan Jolly, Ethan Hosking, Brayden Marsh and Ren Susuki 1 hit each.

Pitching: Emerson Rickard     4Inn     11H     1SO     2BB     2WP    6ER     7RS

                Liam Spence           2Inn     4H       2SO     0BB     0WP    2ER     2RS

Following a difficult preparation in the stormy conditions, not knowing if a game would be played or not, Geelong struggled early.  Doing enough to avoid the big innings and fall well behind, but allowing Waverley to get the jump on them and score in all except their last innings.  After a quiet 1st dig, Geelong got on the board in the 2nd from a hit by Emerson and a walk to Brayden they managed to round the bases on some pass balls.  Geelong picked up another run in the 3rd from a single by Ethan Hosking and double from Liam to score Ethan.  But by this stage Waverley had 5 runs of their own and they held the lead.  Waverley scored 2 more in each of their 4th and 5th digs then in Geelong’s half of the 5th, down 3-9, with some patient at bats with walks to Ethan, Lachlan and Liam followed by a big double through the cones by Will and a pass ball and we had the score back to 7-9.  Liam relieved Emerson on the mound in the 5th dig, and pitched a great 6th innings to have Waverley’s middle order go 3 up, 3 down.  Needing 2 runs for Baycats to stay alive, more patient hitting and good base running bought us 4 walks, a fielders choice hit and a hit from Liam allowed us to tie the game and with 2 out and bases loaded walk to Brayden pushed across the winning run.  A great fight back by the Baycats showing they can stay in a game after being down by 6 runs.  Off to the state final next week at Cheltenham, good luck to all the boys.

Baycat Rookies have a Gala Day

Colonel, Saturday, 13 February 2010

February 13 was a big day for the Baycat rookies first outing as a team

A Gala day Of Rookie Baseball

It is early, for a Saturday, though not for parents of junior baseballers. This morning it is quite cool as we arrive at the Werribee baseball club. They are a friendly and welcoming club. Our young charges are demonstrating an unusual quiet excitement. Yes! They are subdued in expectation. I smell the bacon and eggs cooking on the BBQ. Hmmm! Still the baseballers are unusually quiet.

They spot the coaches and the noise increases. Parents are nodding to each other and relating the traffic conditions they had on the way. All agreed it was an early start. Most had to rise at 6am. It seemed wrong for a weekend day.

Warm up time and the teams are on the field doing drills. Happy smiles and animated chatter everywhere as the warm up continues. Soon the coaches are calling out batting orders and team fielding positions. The happy smiles now look like nervous smiles. Five minutes to game time.

It is 9am and the first of five 50 minute games have begun. Ten minutes rest between each game.

What happened? Where did our little children go? Look out upon the field and we see … the ‘game faces’. It seems that our coaches have turned our children into a team!

Why didn’t we notice that they had gained so many skills? Why they are athletes. The hits are now coming in flurries, runners are crossing home plate with monotonous regularity.

Gee it’s cold on the field. What happened to the forecasts of 25 degrees?

Listen to the parents. Laugher and encouragement is in the air. Yes that is a feature of the game. Sportsmanship is mainly learned from the parents. Baycats parents were setting a wonderful example.

Our Baycats coaches are working very hard. The three key coaches: Bruce, Dave and Bob, of Baycats Rally cap fame, have earned the right to puff out their chests. But they didn’t. You see they are a modest bunch.

No official scores were kept. This day is not about winning. It is about the opportunity to utilize the new found baseball skills, strengthen relationships, bond as a team and create lifelong friendships.

On the day a great many young baseballers: Made great hits, took great catches, created outstanding plays and ran many bases. Also along the way: catches were dropped, balls were missed; some runners tripped and fell; some forgot to run or forgot to stop running.

I cannot fail to mention the standout young player of the day: Brad. What a hitter! What a fielder! What a baseball brain! Well done.

However if you looked closely you could see the future. These young players are the future of our club and the sport of baseball.

This story is about a wonderful day had by: Organisers, parents, coaches and players. One of a great many days to be had by any who want to stay in the sport of baseball.

P.S. we will have some happy pics up on the site soon. Ed.

The runs continued to be pilled on by Chris Anson and Russel Opie who are have stellar seasons with the bat. Great clutch hitting by Craig Abbey and Rob Barnes had the game all but over after 3 innings. This leaves the Masters 3 games clear on top spot with 3 games to go.

A picnic atmosphere, friendly chatter, and laughing children

 Rally Cap

Brilliant sunshine greeted the Rally Cap kids and their parents and the opportunity was not missed. Groups of parents set up on the field to watch their children train. Bags were opened and snacks and drinks were shared.  Friendships made over the last few weeks were being solidified. Baby talk was every where as the next generation of Rally Cap kids crawled on the grass.

Meanwhile the coaches were busy with their charges. Children's laughter seemed to be the only sounds heard, other than the coaches encouragement and instructions.

It is very noticeable  the advancement in the skill level of the kids. What is also noticeable is that as their skills increase how their enthusiasm and confidence  increases. Training is now intense for as from next week testing for the 'Black Cap' begins. Each child has an individual assessment on the range of skills required to earn the coveted 'Black Rally' cap and that is a time consuming process.

So the coaching staff have a substantial task ahead. remember that at the end of this process two teams will be chosen to represent Baycats at a carnival.

Thank you to all those parents who stayed Friday evening and watched a wonderful Claxton Shield game. The Victorian 'Aces' won  9 to 8 against a formidable Perth 'Heat'. Saturday's double header ended up one game a piece.

You will have an opportunity to stay back and see the Claxton Shield Friday 20th November the Baycats will  have a full canteen operating or come and see the Claxton Shield double game Saturday 21 November.
